Phishing is a common cyber attack method where cybercriminals try to trick people into revealing sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and financial details.
Phishing has become an increasingly large problem in Sweden. To protect your bank account from phishing attacks, it’s important to be aware of the warning signs and follow best practices. This guide is written to help you recognise phishing behaviour and take appropriate measures to protect yourself.
Understanding phishing methods
Phishing methods can vary, for example via:
Email phishing: Fraudulent emails that impersonate reputable institutions and ask you to click on links or download attachments.
Smishing (SMS phishing): Fraudsters send fake text messages urging you to click on links or provide personal information.
Vishing (Voice phishing): Fraudsters call and pretend to be bank officials or authority representatives, or pressure you to share sensitive information.
Investment scams: Fake adverts on social media that promise unrealistic returns and lead you to fraudulent websites.
Protect yourself against phishing methods
By being vigilant and following these guidelines, you can reduce the risk of your personal and financial information falling into the wrong hands.
Check the sender
Always verify the sender’s email address before interacting with anyone or anything. Reputable institutions usually use official domain names for email. Be careful with small typos or variations in domain names. For example, a fraudster might use lunarr.app or lunar-bank.com instead of our real domain lunar.app.
Don’t click on suspicious links
Hover your cursor over the link to see where the actual web address goes. If you’re unsure, don’t click on it. Instead, type the website address manually in your browser.
Never share personal information
Institutions don’t ask you to enter sensitive information such as passwords, PIN codes or personal identity numbers via email, SMS or phone calls. Do not identify yourself with an e-ID (such as BankID) at someone else’s request. Never share this information unless you yourself have initiated contact via official channels.
Analyse the content
Phishing messages often use urgent language, threats or tempting offers to manipulate you into acting immediately. Be cautious of messages that demand immediate payment or threaten account closure.
Check grammar and spelling
Phishing attempts often contain grammatical errors, spelling mistakes or clumsy sentence structures. Reputable organisations generally maintain a high standard of communication.
Don’t blindly trust caller ID
Cybercriminals can manipulate caller ID to make it appear as if the call is coming from a reputable source. Even if the caller ID seems genuine, be careful about sharing sensitive information over the phone.
Keep your software updated
Regularly update your operating system, browser and security software to ensure you’re protected against known vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit.
